In honor of National Book Lovers Day, we’re rounding up four of our favorite and most beautiful lit spots in the city. Big or small, each one is unique and has a certain bookworm-ish charm you certainly won’t find at the Barnes and Nobles on 5th Ave. Whether it’s your next book club obsession, a coffee table accent piece or a last minute gift for your work wife; despite the digital age, these beautiful shops are here to stay for the book lover in all of us. So grab your reading glasses and check out these locations to find your next page turner.
The small independent shop with an awesome selection and plenty of books to please anyone you’re with. An excellent spot to bring your boyfriend on a day out in Soho or a child you’ve wound up babysitting. They also have an excellent selection of fancy stationery products, hipster magazines in all categories and a coffee shop that looks like books are gracefully floating from the sky.
3 LIVES & CO
The true definition of a small grown, moms and pops community shop, this bookstore tucked next door to (my favorite) Van Leewun’s ice cream shop has a serious following. You don’t have to live in the West Village to understand the charm of this quaint little old store. Everyone inside is knowledgeable and can easily guide you to your next favorite read.
Always dreamt of living that moment when Belle walks into the gorgeous library the Beast gifted her… except on a New York city scale? Oui? Oui! Try a visit to Albertine, the French/English library tucked away on the Upper East Side in the French Embassy building near the park. The upstairs room has the most stunning constellation ceiling and there are plenty of cozy couches to peruse books on all things macron, Chanel and Paris.
Another design dream, Rizzoli is where you go for stunning interiors and all the best coffee table books. Not to discredit the serious reads you can get there as well, Rizzoli’s speciality is beautifully designed, large format nonfiction books that are (albeit) pricier than your average paperback, but also significantly better illustrated. Bonus points for having the most instagrammable interior!
