In 2015 I met my first business coach who changed my life. I had the pleasure of meeting my business coach at a dinner the week I quit my corporate job. I was shocked to meet someone who taught you how to create a business, and was grateful for her help and guidance as I launched my business. Over the course of my business, I’ve hired nearly 5 different people to be my coach to ideate with me, to hold me accountable and to push me out of my comfort zone and to poke holes in the business I was creating.
One coach in particular even encouraged me to consider coaching myself. *Cue all the initial imposter syndrome.* While I had been helping people with their business based on learnings from my own business I struggled to charge for something that came so naturally to me.
So what qualities do you look for in a good business coach?
1. Transparency
Transparent about who they are and not be all smoke and mirrors about what they can and cannot help with. Nothing is too unrealistic to achieve, but it’s better to start with an extremely realistic and attainable goal.
2. Success record
A success record of past clients. Do some research of what the coach has done for other clients. You might be in a very similar situation as some of their previous clients and find out what they’ve accomplished with them. Most importantly, what are the strategies they use to accomplish them.
3. Accountability
This coach should be able to hold you accountable and continue pushing you forward in your personal and professional journey. The key here is to make sure you feel comfortable with the coach’s approach. A successful coach will test out limits and won’t push you over the edge.
4. Creativity with processes and approaches
They should hold answers and processes you don’t have or haven’t been able to implement on your own.
5. Pushing out of comfort zone
The coach should be a pusher for you to be the best version of yourself.
