Katie Schloss is a force to be reckoned with, albeit a tiny force. Her smile is contagious and I dare you to walk away from a conversation with her uninspired and without a new connection to reach out to. Katie is the founder of Three Jane and is most known for her creation of the Map Necklace (amongst many other great products). Haven't seen it? Pick up a cover of Martha Stewart Wedding and see it casually worn by Jennifer Lawrence. Allison Williams has one too #NBD.

1. Tell me a bit about the name of your company Three Jane?

Three Jane is an imaginary address in the West Village.  As Jane Street skips from one to five, I imagine three as a townhouse filled with dinner party guests and colorful conversations.  It is a space made for artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs.  A place where your wildest, most creative, most confident version of yourself is the aim.

2. I'm a huge fan of your map necklace, how did you come up with the idea?

I came up with the idea for the Map Necklace when my little sister was studying abroad in Europe.  I was trying to think of an unique gift idea for her, so I ended up making a Map Necklace of our childhood home in Connecticut, that way, she could have a little piece of home wherever she went.

3. You recently licensed your signature map necklace to A. Jaffe. How has it been having your product go from being hand made by you to being produced on such a bigger scale?

Working with A.JAFFE has been a wonderful experience.  Back in the day, I spent all night engraving every map and going back & forth with customers about the CADs I designed for them.  Now, there are real systems in place.  Now, Maps by A.JAFFE is carried in 120 stores nationwide.  Now, there is an incredible mapping platform that I never could have dreamed of creating.  It's been wonderful seeing this product grow from something that I started in my bedroom to something that can actually be a scalable product.

4. Do you have any advice on tools that every entrepreneur should have before they start their business?

These are my essentials:

  • CrowdFire
  • DropBox
  • Google Analytics
  • Google Calendar
  • Rookie Cam
  • SocialRank

5. What has been your greatest resource in marketing and promoting your brand?

In a day and age where there's so much noise, so many emails, so many images in your Instagram feed, I think cutting through all of that, is a difficult challenge.  You need to be using social media and e-mail newsletters to have and to maintain a consistent story, but getting that message out there depends on partnerships and great press.  For example, we recently did a partnership with theSkimm, that ended in 75,000 unique visitors to our website and plenty of orders to kick off the holiday season.  I think it's important to think about your consumer (who she is, what she does, what she reads, where she goes), that way, you can find the right partnerships: True relationships that reflect who your customer is and what is important to her.

6. What are your most exciting new pieces for the holidays?

I'm a really big fan of the Maps by A.JAFFE Charm Bracelet.  That way, you can always have a little piece of all the places that have made you into the person you are today.
